Resilient Landscapes #3: Nativars – the New Native Plants

The Cities of Hailey, Ketchum, Sun Valley, Bellevue, the Sawtooth Botanical Garden and Wood River Land Trust are hosting a 6-part Resilient Landscapes for Resilient Communities series in January-June, 2018. Professionals will share their expertise on how to create beautiful landscapes using cultivated and native plants while promoting water conservation in the landscape. These Water-Wise sessions qualify for the Hailey Water Smarty rebate program.

The third class in this exciting 6 part series, Nativars – the New Native Plants, is an in depth, day-long workshop targeting landscape professionals and dedicated gardeners. The workshop, held on February 15 from 10 AM-3 PM will examine past obstacles to using native plants, introduce newly available and specially selected native plants known as nativars.  Participants will learn how to design a palette for season long color utilizing appropriate plant choice and appropriate maintenance techniques to ensure success.

Presenters include:

  • Patti Lousen, Wood River Land Trust: Status of water in Idaho and the Wood River Valley
  • Kristin Fletcher, Sawtooth Botanical Garden: Idaho’s native pollinators, decline and solutions
  • Steve Love, University of Idaho scientist: Development of selected native plants called nativars to enhance usefulness in home landscapes
  • Steve Paulsen, Native Roots, LLC.: Uses of nativars and commercial production
  • Kyle Timm, K & L Design, Salt Lake City: Design considerations, including a new 3D design software
  • Kelley Weston, Native Landscapes: Appropriate maintenance and irrigation techniques

Other classes in the series:

  • #1 & 2: Design Your Own Resilient Landscape, January 18 and 25, 6:30-8:00 PM at Hailey City Hall. On January 18: Sharon Browder (Xeriscape designer) will walk participants through the planning and design process for a small or large, new or old landscape using xeriscape ideas.  On January 25: Certified landscape architects and designers Dean Hernandez, Rob King, Staci Page, Mark Spencer and Sharon Browder will help develop and fine tune your landscape designs. Let the professionals help you!
  • #4: DYI Steps for Irrigation Efficiency, Thursday, April 26, 6:30 – 8:00 PM in Hailey City Hall
  • #5: Nativars in the Home Landscape, Friday, June 8 from 5:30-7:30 pm.  This class is designed for the homeowner who wants to learn more about nativars – newly available native plants with particularly attractive characteristics – and how to incorporate them into their landscape. Steven Paulson, owner of Native Roots, LLC explain their benefits, what species are available and how they help homeowners address issues like water conservation and pollinator decline while enhancing the beauty of their home garden.  Cost for the evening class is $10 SBG members/$12 nonmember.
  • # 6: Field Tour of a Nativar Garden, Saturday, June 9 from 10 AM – 2 PM.  Participants will journey to Native Roots, LLC, a nativar nursery in Kimberly, Idaho.  Dr. Steve Love, University of Idaho scientist, will discuss his life’s work developing selected native plants called nativars to enhance their usefulness in the home landscape.  Steve Paulsen, owner of Native Roots, will lead a tour of the site, introducing participants to nativars available now and explain their many uses and benefits.
